St. Nicholas Church

As it has done for many years, Saint Nicholas once again hosted its annual Epiphany service at Battery Park in New York where two brave divers took to the 48 degree waters of New York City to retrieve the cross as is the Orthodox Christian custom. Father John Romas officiated the event attended by hundreds of parishioners and friends of Saint Nicholas. Major news organizations also covered this annual event which has long been a tradition at Saint Nicholas. This year, Adam Hotzoglou, competing with his father, Nick Hatzoglou, collected the cross out of the frigid waters of Battery Park in New York.

Saint Nicholas Church celebrated its 90th Anniversary on Saint Nicholas Day, Dec 6, 2006 by erecting a “Tent Church” on its original site at Ground Zero. Hundreds of worshipers, Friends, and dignitaries attended to mark both the church’s anniversary and the Feast Day of Saint Nicholas. The services were officiated by Archbishop Demetrios in front of a lifesize posterlike replica of the original Iconostasis of the destroyed church.
